RD PLASMA AT THE ICPIG 2011 CONFERENCE
RD Plasma was also represented at the ICPIG at Queen's University Belfast: PhD students Hendrik Bahre and Daniel Schröder, and PIs Ilija Stefanovic and Volker Schulz-von der Gathen.
The 30th International Conference on Phenomena in Ionized Gases (ICPIG) was held in Belfast, Northern Ireland, on August 28th – September 2nd 2011. The 30th ICPIG covered a wide range of fundamental and applied aspects of ionized gases. This conference emphasised interdisciplinary research and fostered exchange between different communities.
INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM AND EXHIBITION OF THE AMERICAN VACUUM SOCIETY
AVS 58th International Symposium and Exhibition of the American Vacuum Society (AVS) was held in Nashville, Tennessee, USA between 30th of October and 4th of November, 2011. AVS is a membership organization that fosters networking among professionals in the materials, interfaces, and processing communities. This symposium is an international meeting point for them. More than 3,000 attendees and 200 exhibitors gathered together to exchange the latest breakthroughs in science and technology this year. Between main topics were Graphene, nanostructured materials for solar-based applications, atomic layer deposition or properties and application of variety of thin films. The Ruhr-Universität Bochum and its Research Department “Plasmas with Complex Interactions” has been represented by Jun.-Prof. Jan Benedikt, who gave a talk with the title “Deposition of SiOx films by means of atmospheric pressure microplasma jet: the study of deposition mechanism”. The results generated within the project C1 of the Research Group 1123 “Physics of Microplasmas” (FOR 1123) of the German Research Foundation (DFG) were presented and discussed.

INTERDISCIPLINARY SYMPOSIUM: JAPAN WEEK
The Interdisciplinary Symposium presents the scientific cooperation between RUB and its Japanese partner universities. German and Japanese scientists who work intensively together report on their cooperation experiences and present the results of their joint research. Students and scientists of all faculties who are working with Japanese partners, who are interested in a cooperation or who are interested in Japan-related research topics are cordially invited to attend the Interdisciplinary Symposium. This will have been held on Tuesday, Nov. 22 from 4-6 p.m. in the Event Center.
Prof. Dr. Uwe Czarnetzki (Faculty of Physics and Astronomy) will give a lecture on "Scientific Exchange with Japan in Plasma Physics and Technology".
64TH GASEOUS ELECTRONICS CONFERENCE IN SALT LAKE CITY
The 64th Gaseous Electronics Conference (GEC) is, together with the 53rd Annual Meeting of the American Physical Society Division of Plasma Physics, held November 4th-18th, 2011 in Salt Lake City, USA. This year, the GEC contains 37 invited talks, 209 oral talks and 175 poster presentations with topics ranging from fundamental studies of for example Electron and photon collisions with atoms and molecules, to plasma applications such as processing of materials or treatment of living tissues. The “Research Department Plasmas with Complex Interactions “of RUB is represented very well this year. Thirteen researches are visiting the conference with three invited talks (Jan Benedikt talks about the diagnostics of atmospheric pressure plasma jets, Julian Schulze discusses the electric asymmetry effect in capacitively coupled discharges, and Prof. Uwe Czarnetzki gives a talk at the Monday workshop "Control of Distribution Functions in Low Temperature Plasmas: Creating the Roadmap"), 9 oral talks and 10 posters. This counts for almost 5% of all contributions at the conference and illustrates the leading position of RUB in the low temperature plasma research!
